Some factors associated with a poor prognosis after DC have been identified, including the initial Glasgow Score Scale (GCS) and the pupillary status after trauma or on admission ( 13– 17). The latest edition of the relevant guidelines provides the indications for and approaches to DC in patients with intractable ICP that is refractory to conservative treatment (secondary DC) and/or various types of intracranial lesions (primary DC) ( 9).Īlthough DC has saved innumerable lives in the past decades, the high postoperative mortality and disability rates in severely injured patients are not only devastating to patients and their family members but also challenging for neurosurgeons ( 10– 12). The treatments, rehabilitation therapy, and permanent sequelae associated with TBI impose a substantial economic burden on patients' families and have profound impacts on society ( 5, 6).ĭecompressive craniectomy (DC), with or without the removal of the intracranial hematoma, plays a pivotal role in the treatment of patients with TBI with substantial mass lesions or uncontrolled elevation of the intracranial pressure (ICP) ( 7, 8). China has more cases of TBI than many other counties, making it almost impossible to implement a nationwide epidemiological investigation ( 3, 4). Traumatic brain injury (TBI), which is a significant public health issue, has become the main cause of trauma-related death and disability worldwide ( 1, 2). DC is more valuable for younger patients. In multivariate analysis, advanced age (OR: 7.741, CI: 2.288–26.189), prolonged preoperative activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) (OR: 7.263, CI: 1.323–39.890), and low GCS (OR: 6.162, CI: 1.478–25.684) were associated with a higher risk of 30-day mortality, while advanced age (OR: 8.812, CI: 1.817–42.729) was the only independent predictor of a poor 6-month prognosis in patients undergoing DC with preoperative bilateral dilated pupils and a GCS score <5.Ĭonclusions: The mortality and disability rates are extremely high in severe TBI patients undergoing emergency DC with bilateral fixed pupils and a GCS score <5. In total, 74 patients (78.7%) died within 30 days, and 84 (89.4%) had a poor 6-month outcome (GOS 1–2). Results: A total of 94 sTBI patients with bilateral dilated pupils and a GCS score lower than five who underwent emergency DC were enrolled. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the factors associated with 30-day mortality and 6-month negative neurological outcome. All data, such as patient demographics, radiological findings, clinical parameters, and preoperative laboratory variables, were extracted. Methods: The authors reviewed the data from patients who underwent emergency DC from January 2012 to March 2019 in a medical center in China. This retrospective study explored the clinical outcomes and risk factors for an unfavorable prognosis in sTBI patients undergoing emergency DC with bilateral dilated pupils and a GCS score <5. However, whether DC should be performed in patients with bilateral dilated pupils and a low Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score is still controversial. Objective: Decompressive craniectomy (DC) plays an important role in the treatment of patients with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) with mass lesions and intractably elevated intracranial hypertension (ICP). It was so popular that he was asked to create a version for mass production. Finally, after years of development, Frutiger gave the airport Roissy. There was only one requirement, really-that the type be legible from a great distance-but meeting that requirement was tough. It all began in 1968, when Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger was asked to design a typeface for signage at Paris’s Charles de Gaulle airport. That knack for type design ran in the family his father, Linn Boyd Benton, created the Century typeface in the late 1800s. Bodoni can most famously be seen in the Columbia Records wordmark logo, and in modified forms in Nirvana’s logo (which uses a variant called Onyx) and the masthead of Vogue.īodoni isn't the only famous typeface Benton designed: He also created News Gothic, which is memorably used at the beginning of the Star Wars: A New Hope. The design was recut in 1907 by American Type Founders’ Morris Fuller Benton, and it's this version which is still in use today. The serif Bodoni typeface, which is based on the typographer's original 18th-century designs, features strong contrast between the thick and thin strokes of the letters. Over the course of his career, Bodoni developed numerous typefaces and published a number of books detailing his meticulous designs. Typographer Giabattista Bodoni (1740–1813) had a killer resume: He was employed by a number of Italian dukes and was the court typographer for Charles III of Spain. One typographer griped that the use of Helvetica in Titanic (for the dials on the pressure gauge) was “like taking out a Palm Pilot on the deck of the Titanic.” 3. Confidential have also made use of the typeface, despite taking place in 1912 and the 1950s, respectively. More controversially, movies like Titanic and L.A. Today, Helvetica is one of the most popular typefaces in the world and is used for all the lettering on the New York subway signage since 1989, the American Apparel logo, and many U.S. Three years later, the typeface was renamed Helvetica, after the Latin word for Swiss, to make it more internationally marketable. The result, Haas-Grotesk, was released in 1957 it immediately became popular thanks to its sleek, neutral design. In 1956, Eduard Hoffmann, manager of the Hass Type Foundry, commissioned Swiss typesetter Max Miedinger to design a new sans-serif typeface based on Akzidenz-Grotesk. Akzidenz-Grotesk is most often used in advertising and logos, and can be seen as the typeface used for the American Red Cross, in Arizona State University's branding, and in the Brooklyn Nets wordmark logo. It got a facelift in 1950s and '60s thanks to designer Günther Gerhard Lange, whose work made Akzidenz-Grotesk into a more useable family of typefaces. Released in 1898, it was designed by the Berthold Type Foundry and was based on another early sans-serif typeface, Royal Grotesk Light. AKZIDENZ-GROTESKĪkzidenz-Grotesk is one of the the most influential of the early sans-serif typefaces. Serif typefaces have small flourishes or lines at the tops and bottoms of each letter and are most commonly used in books, mastheads, and headlines, while sans-serif typefaces lack those flourishes and are most commonly used for logos, signage, and online. A typeface is the letters, numbers, and symbols that make up a design of type, while a font is one particular weight and style of a typeface-Garamond is the typeface, Garamond 12 italic is the font. But many of them have histories richer than their designs convey, including the ten below.īefore we start, some terms you should know. We’re always meeting the same two types of entrepreneurs. Did you skip spring break to pursue a long-term project? Did you work while you were in school? Have you built anything that took months of heads-down crunch mode to make possible? When we consider working with you as a founder, we look for your willingness to make these tradeoffs earlier in your life and career. The most successful entrepreneurs are willing to sacrifice in the short term for long-term impact. Being a founder is a constant, grueling exercise in deferring happiness and victory. But there are a few other things we haven’t seen written about or discussed enough that end up mattering a lot: Then there’s all the typical stuff: integrity, credibility, market understanding, learning ability, etc. This is an exceedingly rare set of skills - and it’s what we seek to find in every founder conversation we have. You have to be able to draw it yourself and execute at the same time. You can’t wait for someone to hand you a roadmap. You have to overcome inertia, have an unbelievable amount of conviction, and be willing to drive through brick walls. To mix our metaphors, before a founder starts building their castle, they have to make sure they’ve picked the right piece of land.īuilding an enduring company is ridiculously hard. Sure, the bankers thought I was crazy because they hadn’t heard of this subject yet, but they were polite and even helped me carry the 5 boxes (weighing 22lbs each) to me car. They arrived three days later in rolls which are in boxes of $100 face value. I called my bank and ordered $500 worth of nickels. Back up the truck and buy all you can while they are on sale!Īnyone can buy as many nickels as they want right now because it is legal currency. If the government wants to subsidize my purchase of copper and nickel by making then into a coin and declaring by FIAT that is MUST be worth 5 cents, then shame on them. Without gold and silver money the only way to protect yourself from government theft via deliberate inflation is to buy metal or other tangible assets. The offenders are the people running the government and the federal reserve!!! So Uva, instead of proposing more restrictions on the American citizens, why are you not proposing a return to sound money in the form of gold and silver? The offenders here aren’t American Citizens. Shame on them for giving the power to produce money to a PRIVATE (for profit) bank known as the federal reserve. Shame on them for violating the Constitution which mandates only the use of gold and silver coinage as money. So I hoard metal shamelessly and declare it proudly! In fact, shame on THEM for stealing our wealth with an unconscionable, and invisible inflation tax which has the worst impact on the poor and uneducated. So much so that since the last silver quarters and dimes were circulated as money in 1964 they have gone up in value 24X when compared to the US Dollar. The problem is that the government is printing so much money that inflation is shrinking the value of the dollar. Last year, the United States Mint shipped a total of $777.6 million in circulating coins, which earned $427.8 million in offense but what you are proposing is stupid, fascist and unenforceable. The gains from other denominations more than made up for this amount. In the most recent fiscal year, the US Mint lost a combined 22 million on production of the cent and nickel. Historical Cost of Producing the Nickel Fiscal YearĪlthough producing and distributing cents and nickels has generated losses each year, the gains from other denominations more than make up for the losses. Historical Cost of Producing the Penny Fiscal Year The current composition of the nickel is 75% copper and 25% nickel. The current composition of the cent is 2.5% copper and 97.5% zinc. Since 2006, it has cost more than face value to produce the cent and nickel due to the increased costs of base metals. Amounts earned through seigniorage are transferred to the United States Treasury General Fund. Seigniorage arises from the difference between the face value and the cost to manufacture and distribute the coins. The Mint recognizes revenue based on the face value of coins as they are shipped. The United States Mint produces and issues coins for circulation, which are distributed through the Federal Reserve Banks in quantities needed to replenish inventories and meet the needs of commerce. The cost of the coins was recently 1.62 cents to produce each penny and 5.79 cents to produce each nickel. For the past four years, it has cost the United States Mint more than face value to produce the penny and the nickel.
